One of the most disturbing cases in the history of Illinois Humane’s cruelty work, Oakley came to Illinois Humane in August of 2002 with a fractured leg wherein the bone was significantly protruding from the skin. The three other legs were chewed so badly they were considered “degloved”. The dog was in shock. The first 2-3 days of treatment were touch and go, there was no assurance she would make it. The fractured leg had to be amputated. What had happened? Three dogs in a household had been getting into increasingly vicious fights. Animal Control had been called out previously and advised the owners of the incredibly dangerous situation they were allowing to continue, for the kids in the home, the dogs and they themselves. Oakley ultimately made it, at a price tag of well over $6,000 in medical intervention and supported recovery. Very fortunately one of Illinois Humane’s most experienced medical foster homes agreed to take her in and take charge of her care. The original owners have been referred for prosecution, citing to cruelty provisions prohibiting knowingly putting the dogs in a situation resulting in serious injury.
